Grafting Programme in Bodrum,
March-April 2008

Bodrum is one of the districts of Muğla where heritage fruits are most under threat. Two rare varieties – the yanıkızıl and ceviz pears – which local people told us had died out were discovered in the village of Dereköy. Scions were taken from these trees, and from other endangered pear varieties such as the hırsızalmaz, çıngıl and gökçe, and grafted onto wild pear stock in Ortakent, the Asım Kocabıyık Biodiversity Preservation Park, and local gardens.

Cuttings and secondary shoots from local grape varieties such as the kızılmüşket, bombalak and hamıtatlı; and from fig varieties including the patlıcan, karayaprak and kuş were given to Bodrum Municipal Nursery and local people interested in propagating heritage varieties.
