Ethnobotany Educational Programme in Datca

Elisabeth Tuzun, who is a member of the Heritage Fruit Project based in Datca, is also engaged in another project. She is researching the utilisation of plants in Datca as part of the Turkish Academy of Sciences Cultural Inventory Project. This project aims to record local knowledge of wild plants in particular. So that this traditional knowledge is not lost, school children are given forms to fill out with the help of older family members.

Elisabeth was assisted by Hatice Şen, an educationalist who has been conducting the Nature Society’s My Nature Bag initiative, and Meray Yeşiltas, our advisor on local plants who lives in Palamutbuku. Elisabeth explained that on 28 March 2008 four classes in Cumali village school took part in interactive presentations lasting 40 minutes each. In a corner of the school playground the younger children (classes 4A and 5A) were asked to identify the plants growing there, how many meals that small patch of land could provide, which of the plants animals liked most, and other similar questions, and the answers were discussed as a group. The older children (classes 6A and 7A) divided into groups of five, and lots were drawn to decide which plant they should gather. They were then asked to draw the plant and tell the class about it. The programme was both enjoyable and successful. The children proved to be interested and knowledgeable. A total of 100 children from four villages (Sındı, Yaka, Yazi and Cumali) in the Betce area who attend the school participated in the programme that day.
