Turkey's Most Famous Grape, the Sultana, is being replaced by the Israelis with the Thomson Grape, 4.08.2007
In Manisa, famous for its Sultana grapes, Israeli grape grower Asaf Arad, systems engineer Shabtay Hanan and marketing expert Yosi Chassin have begun growing Thomson grapes, which command a large market abroad, in two vineyards in the villages of Sığırtmaçlı and Bağlıca in the district of Sarıgöl. In the first stage of the project 20 decares of land have been planted with Thomson grapes, and local growers are being trained in their cultivation. It is planned to expand cultivation of the variety in 2008. Although sultana grapes are widely grown in this region, only a very small quantity is exported fresh. By means of pesticide application and special techniques used in spring when the bunches begin forming, the Thomson grape develops larger grapes than the sultana and is in demand on international markets.
