Turkish Bitter Orange
The bitter orange has been grown in Turkey since at least the 16th century. The dark orange skin is pocked and thick, and the flesh adheres to the pith. Selection work on the local variety, using 31 types with varying characteristics from different areas of the eastern Mediterranean region is now being carried out by Çukurova University Faculty of Agriculture. Different varieties are needed for different uses. The picture shows bitter orange trees lining the streets in the town of Selçuk in İzmir.
